This project responds to the lack of public and civic space in Hong Kong and puts forward a new brief to work with the expansion of the Mass Transit Rail which is known as MTR by providing a new typology of public and civic space in the next 30 years.
Today, under the government’s rail-led transport policy which is known as the MTR is a major public transport network serving 7 million people with 5 million trips made in an average weekday in Hong Kong. The role of MTR is not solely providing efficient transportations but also encouraging the TOD (transit-oriented development) program, by promoting urban development that is compact, mixed-use, closely integrated with mass transit.
The project aims to focus on a specific type of space in this city - public space.
Hong Kong has a public space deficit. Individuals only have 2.2 m2 of public space.
The strategy is to elevate all new future MTR stations by 6 meters, most importantly the project does not change the architectures and programs at all. With the application of this strategy, all four new stations’ public and civic spaces will increase from 0 m2 to approximately 1 million m2.
